Carlisle
Floyd is a contemporary American composer. Susannah, who has been rejected
by her community through no fault of her own, sits on her porch and
tries to forget her ordeal by singing a melodious ballad about a May-December
lover who deserted his sweetheart and her baby.

The opera
is set in India, under British rule, in the 19th century. Lakme is the
beautiful daughter of the Brahmin priest who is guardian of a sacred
temple. Mallika is Lakme’s servant and companion. A flowering
garden near the temple, is surrounded by a thick bamboo forest. In early
morning, Lakme and Mallika sing this pastoral duet as they begin their
daily tasks. This popular duet is also known as "The Flower Duet."
